Strict NAT on Xbox Live

It is my hope this blog entry will help others with this nagging NAT Strict issue. Many have chimed in how to make NAT Open. Here is my experience trying three options and the one that worked for me:

I have been able to play on Xbox Live for about two years without any trouble whatsoever. Then Gears of War was released with online co-op capability. A friend of mine a few Western states over, would host the game and send me the invite. It worked great for two weeks, but then suddenly one day the connection would drop. I could no longer connect and I was perplexed what changed. After running the Xbox Live Connection Test on Xbox 360, NAT was coming up Strict; everything else was connected and confirmed. I didn't know what Strict NAT meant at the time, and I don't even remember what it said when I could play Gears of War online. But after hours of research I learned that NAT needed to say Open for optimum online gaming, so that was the goal.

Twelve hours later over a two day span of troubleshooting, reconfiguring my Netgear WGT624v2 Xbox Live Compatible router, and upgrading to the Xbox 360 Wireless Connectivity Adapter, from my MN-740 Xbox Wireless Bridge, I finally figured out how to make it work.

There are three methods to try that I got from the Xbox forums, including:

  1. DMZ
  2. Port Forwarding
  3. UPnp (Universal PlugNPlay)
The most important point about these three methods is that they cannot be mixed. You must try each one individually. Also, not all routers have a UPnP option. If yours doesn't, I hate to break it to you, but you need a new router.

First, I called Xbox Live Support and they concluded that they couldn't transfer me to Tier 2 support until I could rule out my ISP as an issue. You see, there are Xbox Live Compatible ISP's and while mine isn't, when I connected my cable modem directly to the Xbox 360 the NAT reported as Open. Case closed on that.

Using the DMZ option was useless; it just didn't work. I tried it with a static internal IP and I tried it on Automatic DHCP with a Reserved IP for the Xbox 360 using the MAC Address.

I configured a Static IP to use Port Forwarding for ports UDP 88, UDP 2074, UDP 3074, and TCP 3074 - useless.

So the ONLY option that worked for me on my router is the UPnp option. My configuration on the Xbox 360 was set to Auto (IP/DNS). I am using WPA security on the wireless router. Port Forwarding is configured for other ports, but not the ports mentioned above, and DMZ is disabled. To my surprise and delight, NAT reported as Open.

Stephen's Gravatar Dear Jim,

Thank you for your insight on this particular issue. I own the same router as you and was experiencing the same problem. The UpNP solution worked to set my NAT to open as well, thought i'd drop you a line to let you know that you're efforts weren't in vein.

thanks again.

Geoff's Gravatar So after you set up the upnp stuff, did you look and see which ports it was requesting to forward? I bet you could look at what it's requesting, then set that as a permanent rule in your router's port forward rules.

chupacabra1loco's Gravatar Thanks for that. I had the same problem since I moved in to this temp apartment with DSL and my own belkin router G. I could not join up with some friends and the NAT was strict.

I tried the same things you did and they didn't work. Just now , before I changed the UPnp setting, I reset the router (through the website not by unplugging it) and now all is well, NAT it open.

Steven's Gravatar I am speechless. Thanks Jim. I've went through the EXACT same problem as you. I've tried everything you've done. I can't believe that simply turning on uPNP solved the problem. Thanks again.

Nar's Gravatar Hi. Do you know if you can use the Port Forwarding UPnp solution if your Macintosh is what you are using for a wireless router. We're getting "moderate" and having problems.

Mason's Gravatar Thank you so much. My router has been set at moderate NAT since i got it, which was not a huge problem until 90% of my class got Halo 3, and i was unable to play with them. It's really amazing that changing that one setting is all you need to do.
# Posted By Mason | 9/30/07 2:41 PM
Steve's Gravatar With UPnP do you not loose the ability to use all the other networks on the router at the same time? Just wondering I have never worked with linksys I'm a Dlink guy

I'm not all thats experienced with networking so I figured you could proboly answer my questions a lot faster the searching the net for answers.

Thanks a lot Steve

Mo's Gravatar Thanks for the help. I'm not too Network savy and been taking the advice of many of my friends to change/add port settings which did not work.

It was just as easy as enabling the UPnP and NAT is Open.

Schrader's Gravatar Thanks So Much. I couldn't figure out why my NAT was set to stict. Set up the UPnp and it Open up finally!

zboscho's Gravatar I used port forwarding and I had no problem getting my 360 to detect my router as open. Also, it looks like port 2074 isn't needed:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908874

The whole thing on xbox live and Bungie saying you need a new router if you're not "Open" isn't always true. Most routers are fairly configurable in the port forwarding area. Mine was and it's only the crap that came with my DSL

Kirkula's Gravatar this is all fine and dandy, till you have to have 2 xbox's hooked up. we don't need to change any settings at all in order to have one or the other working. but once we both wanna play at the same time...BAM!!! moderate to strict NAT on one or both boxes. our setup here is really damn funky. the topology is setup as such: Cable modem -> Router one (linksys) which is upstairs (landlords...damn them!) -> 2 computers upstairs then to another router down here (DHCP turned on because a) we don't have a switch and b) to many wires to turn it into one) the router is a belkin. from there it goes to his computer, his xbox, his vonage and then to my router (which I had room to turn off DHCP and make it a switch, whew, less configuration!) ok. now with all the settings set up to default, no problemo with 1 box on at a time. internet is superfast with all computers doin major downloads at once, as it should be. but once I turn on mine, either he gets kicked off, or I can't connect. depends on what games we are playin. so first thing we tried was just simply turning off NAT on the belkin. OOOPS! now nothin works. turn it back on, disable DMZ. seemed to work. but came up as open. I started Oblivion (with downloaded content, needs to have constant internet connect for it to work. stupid, eh?) and he got strict again. DOH!! so I re-enabled that, and opened the proper ports from the upstairs router down to ours, then tried to open those ports for each of our boxes...came to realize somethin that sounds pretty fishy...turns out, you can't open 1 port for 2 different IP'S!!!! hmmm...PLEASE tell me that someone out there has figured out a way to have 2 boxes on one interent connect with both open no matter what. it seems it is impossible. or maybe I am overlooking something?
# Posted By Kirkula | 10/23/07 1:53 AM
Kirkula's Gravatar and about the 3 posts...my bad, thought I didn't click the button...spent 5 hours tryin to get the 2 boxes to work at the same time after spending 11 hours working on other people's computers...hahaha

Troy's Gravatar I just tried your port forwarding method and that worked great. What this site has that others are missing I found was the UDP 2074. Mos tsites have the TCP/UDP 3074 and UDP 88, but it's the UDP 2074 that made mine click.

Adrian Capp's Gravatar I have a Netgear WGR614v5 router connecting wirelessly to a Netgear WG602v3 access point running in "Client Bridge" mode. The WG602 is hardwired to the XBox 360.

Security wise I'm using both WEP and an Access List based on MAC address. I also have a lot of ports blocked by default.

I was really starting to think that this configuration would not work with XBox Live.

The solution for me using this configuration was enabling UPnP on the router.

Thank you very much.

Jonman's Gravatar I'm having the same problem with my Linksys WRT55AG - I've opened the ports, UPnP is enabled, I've set a static IP for the 360, and it *still* drops connections.
It's downright infuriating.

acc13's Gravatar I'm using a Linksys WRT55AG 2.0.
Following Jim's directions, if I have a dynamic IP, and UPnP enabled, then my NAT miraculously was reported as open.
For some reason, it didn't work with a static IP...wierd.

I upgraded my router firmware as well, to a version supported according to:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/connecttolive/xb...

Kick-ass. Thanks Jim.

xXswordXx's Gravatar I have the same exact router and you were correct. UPnP needs to be turn on before the NAT become open.
# Posted By xXswordXx | 11/20/07 9:19 PM
DeathsHead's Gravatar Kirkula, I am having the same issue. Bottom line is that you are probably going to need to break down and pick up a few more external IP's and possibly put them into the DMZ. Like you have found out, you cannot use port forwarding on multiple ip's. Thus you need routable ip's (internet addresses). I am still looking into how M$ determines if you are strict or moderate but I am guessing that it might be time delay. Realize that the more machines you have running at the same time on the same ports, the more overhead NAT conversations the router has to keep track of. If you had a badass router(*cough* cisco) that could do it all in hardware it may solve these issues. If anyone else can comment on M$ algorithms for determining open NAT please post.

Doug's Gravatar I was also getting the strict Nat with a Netgear WGR614v6. I already had UPNP enabled, try forwarding and that didn't work either.

So I checked the firm ware and noticed I had a pretty old version. Updated to the latest version, ran xbox live check again and boom, Nat Open.

Captain Overkill's Gravatar Either UPnP or try to find a setting on your router called gaming mode. Gaming mode magically opens up your nat.

Mike J's Gravatar Dude, You saved me !!! My son was getting violently agitated because his Xbox 360 game was not allowing him to chat with his friends or host his own games. I went into my Netgear wireless router as per your advice, model WGT624 V2 (you need the router config CD) and turned on UPnP setting. I also upgraded the firmware on my router as well. This is a very simple solution !!!! I wonder if this has made my computer more vulnerable to hackers?? Thanks again Mike

Andrew's Gravatar Wow. I have been having this problem for months now and after being fed up with it I decided it was time to do some internet research and learn how to open my NAT so I could game with my friends on XBL. Let me just say boy was that easy. The port forwarding/port triggering had no affect what so ever on my NAT setting. I did exactly what Jim said and I simply checked the box in the UPnP and whalah my NAT is now open.

Thanks for the info Jim.

Andy's Gravatar I know this doesn't make a perfect fix, but if the specific port forwarding doesn't work, make the range as big as it can go. The Linksys WRT54G has a range of 0-65535, and if you put that in every box, making the IP Address go from 0-9 through all the spots, it will work. That opens every port. I don't know if that leaves you vulnerable for hacking or anything, but it works and now I'm happy. (None of the others worked for me, so this was a last chance effort) Happy gaming.

Zach's Gravatar Hey, i read through a little bit of this and wondered if my Linksys router would have a UPnP option.
# Posted By Zach | 1/2/08 3:37 PM
Stevie Jensen's Gravatar Well I try what you said and it didn't work for me at all even with the same router so I scroll through the comments and found one about updating the firmware.

Went to netgear upgraded to latest firmware and then had the option under WAN to open or secure NAT and that fix my problem along with clicking the UPnP on
# Posted By Stevie Jensen | 1/3/08 2:29 AM
Dan's Gravatar it worked!!

Here's what i did:
1) Set your network connection types to automatic in the xbox dashboard. (for IP address and DNS settings). nothing should be set to manual.
2) go into the router and disable all the port forwarding to the xbox.
3) go into the UPnP settings of the router and turn on UPnP

Nick's Gravatar I have forwarded tcp/udp ports 88, 3074, and 2074 on my router and my NAT mode stays at 'Strict'. My Router has no uPNP settings but has the port forwarding and NAT configuration options. I don't see why it will not work.

Has anyone else found any luck NOT using uPNP? My Router is a checkpoint safe@home, very nice router, 4 times the cost of a standard dlink or linksys router. That's the only reason I don't want to get rid of it.
# Posted By Nick | 1/6/08 6:23 PM
Kirkula's Gravatar here's a nice little fix for multiple boxes in the house. I was telling my boss about these problems, and he told me to just change the DNS on the second box (I have optimum online, they offer 3 DNS addresses. I don't know about others) just go to command prompt, type in 'ipconfig /all' ... minus the ' and ' of course.... check out your DNS addresses. set one to one of them, then another to another one. Now we are both open all the time. Don't know exactally how all that works though, never asked my boss, and never looked it up yet, haha. but hey, who cares, it works. (I'm not familiar with DNS yet)

sk84life's Gravatar Hi i seem to be having a serious issue with this. I have a Netgear Wireless Router WGR614v6 and have tryed all the above and still get Strict NAT settings.

I have my UPnP turned on but on the UPnP portmap table its showing me nothing ? assuming it cannot find the xbox ? i have my xbox connected to my router Via a ethernet cable.

One thing i did try and it failed was i hooked up my xbox straight into my Modem "NTL:home Broadband Internet" box and it could not find a IP address. Assuming this is going to be a problem from the start.

I also gave my xbox a static ip and port fowarded the ports ppl have listed above, with UPnP on and off and still strict. It used to work fine but now its gone all strict on me :( anyone one else having the same sort of problems as me ?

Josh's Gravatar We have the linksys wireless router BEFSR41, ver.4.2. All you have to do is turn on UPnP to get the NET to open. Go to the URL 192.168.1.1. The user name is left blank and the passwork is admin. Go to the tab "administration" and enable UPnP and "allow users to make configuration changes". Disable the third bullet, the one at the bottom. Save your settings and you should be good to go.

Karl Breiner's Gravatar Wow. I read through most of these comments and did not see anyone mention it, but enabling Upnp on your router poses a significant security risk to your home network. I'm not going to explain why; just do a google or read the wiki on it.

The bottom line is that it is better to use a DMZ or even port forward to the Xbox. I have mine set to port forward to my Xbox and have no issues. NAT is reported as open. I'm not sure why others have problems with this & I suspect a lot of times it's operator error..

Anyway, UPnP = BAD IDEA!!!

Josh's Gravatar Thanks a bunch!

For people who don't know how to change the settings for the UPnP, here you go:

1. Find the IP Address that your router is using your network configuration.

2. Open a new web browser (or any other kind of browser) and type in http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx with the x's being the IP address of your router.

3. Look for a section called "System Settings" (maybe near the bottom) and click on it.

4. Among the options you should find something with a label that says something about UPnP. Enable it.

5. "Save" or "Apply" the changes (whichever applies to your system), or just go back to the main menu if if there is not option like that.

6. Look for an option to reset the router on the page you are looking at. It could be listed in the same place you found the "System Settings" option.

7. Reset the router and wait 60 seconds for it to fully reset and start up again. (If you cannot find the reset option, you can also just unplug the router and plug it back in, but I recommend trying the other way first.)

8. Now, test your XBox Live connection again and it should say "NAT Open" at the bottom of the checklist.

I hope this helps any of you who were a little confused at first.

-Josh

Josh's Gravatar Edit to step 1:

1. Find the IP address that your router is using. You can find this on your computer by looking in your network configuration.
