Employers Are Using Flex to Misrepresent Job Openings

Employers are using Flex to lure ColdFusion programmers to take positions that aren't really Flex positions, but rather plain ol' CF positions. Be warned, because it has happened to me a couple of times now - I'm a slow learner I guess.

I didn't ask the right questions in the job interview and found out after starting the job (W-2 Contracts) that things weren't as they seemed.

They might show you Flex apps their company has built, or say they are open to using Flex. Their techniques are many, but you have to ask point blank

Will I be coding Flex 2 within the first month of starting the position?
If you don't ask that - then you are setting yourself up for the unknown and you could lock yourself into a W-2 contract/fulltime position that won't have you coding to your ability.

Brandon Harper's Gravatar Sounds familiar, only with Java. It's impossible to search for Java jobs because everyone lists Java as a requirement or nice to have... you literally have to try a bunch of different Java related searches to find Java specific jobs.

PS-- holy captcha! 6 chars?

Jim Pickering's Gravatar @Brandon - So are you saying the when people list Java as a nice-to-have, you find that they aren't using Java at all? If that is the case, what are they using?

What's the big deal with 6 chars for the captcha? That's the default for this version of BlogCFC - I didn't do it on purpose. I don't lose sleep over it either. Is there a new captcha char ISO that I missed out on?

todd sharp's Gravatar You can simplify your captcha very easily in blogCFC. You say you don't lose any sleep over it, but I guarantee you more then one potential commenter has simply given up on the complex beast and cancelled out of a comment.

Alfio Raymond's Gravatar It seems that any technology that starts to get recognized in the software industry is instantly added to a job posting even thought it is out for a short time. I remember when I was coding with VB in Visual Studio 6 and as soon as Microsoft announced .Net all recruiters were looking for .Net developers. After that switched to ColdFusion development and life has been easier but saw it happen again when Flex first came on the scene. In the past 2 years it's been on job listings but after getting hired realized not a single person was using it and there was no development or training for it.

Jim Pickering's Gravatar @Todd - I like dedicated blog commenters who don't have an issue with typing six characters in the captcha. Thanks for weathering the storm.

@Alfio - I hear ya. The responsibility has shifted to us to ask the right questions in the interview, otherwise we'll just end us wasting our time. Who wants to stay in a job that isn't what was described in the interview?

Lola LB's Gravatar And I really love those folks who ask for 3 years experience in something that has only been out for 2 years, beta testing included.
